In the spring of 2001, Seattle singer/songwriter Wes Weddell captivated the Northwest with his ambitions to chronicle the lives of contemporary Washington State residents in song. In sixty-five days cavorting around the state, the multi-instrumentalist produced nine regionally-themed songs based upon stories he encountered in communities everywhere from Mossyrock to Toppenish. The academic component of the University of Washington-sponsored Project also earned Wes the inaugural Mary Gates Venture Fellowship and a sizable following from media sources across the state...not to mention comprising fifteen credits-worth of coursework for the UW history graduate (then a junior).
That December, Wes followed the release of his do-it-yerself album Battlefields & Broken Deals with studio recordings of the Project songs on My Northwest Home, allowed him to make good on his promises to return the songs to the communities from which they originated and to share the intertwining melodies and anecdotes inspired by his travels with audiences from here to way over there (an ongoing process!).
With the 2006 release of Songs to Get You From Here to There, Wes adds another strong effort at home on the road. The new album features twelve original songs that span the in-between places and experiences that make us human. From Carry On, the poignant, true story of a World War II bomber pilot that won the 2006 Tumbleweed Songwriting Contest, to the rockabilly romp of You Left Me With No Choice; the steady and playful drive of Every Now & Then a Sunset to the contemplative turns of Autumn’s Calling and Hills That I Call Homethe stories remind one that journeys come every day.
A native of Pullman, Wash., Wes also keeps busy offering school programs, private instrument lessons, production assistance, and has founded Pugets Sound Productions, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to presenting community live-music events around the region.
